The Supreme Court on 12th October, 2020 issued notice to the Modi government on two petitions challenging the three farm laws recently passed by the parliament
The three farm laws are:
Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Formation and Facilitation) Act, 2020
Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farmer Services Act, 2020
The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020
It took effect From 27 September after the assent of President Ram Nath Kovid.
The Petitions alleged that the three farm laws passes by Parliament would dismantle the Agriculture Produce Market Committees system intended to ensure fair prices for farm products.
Agriculture plays an important role in boosting our Indian economy. Over 70 percent of the rural households depend on agriculture for their livelihood and it also contributes about 17% to 18% to the total GDP. Still, Everyday about 28 people dependent on farming die in India. Therefore it is the duty of the government to implement laws that will empower and protect the interest of the farmers and also which will act entirely act on the benefit of the farmers as they are the backbone of our economy.
